The Huguenots Cross (Hugenoten Kruis)What does it mean? The cross has 4 parts. The center piece is the so called Maltese cross. It has 4 arms of the same size. The 8 points at the ends of the arms signify the 8 Beatitudes of the Sermon of the Mount (Matt 5:3-10). Between the arms of the cross is a wreath of 4 lilies and 4 hearts. The lilies signify the symbol of purity, the hearts are the symbol of faithfulness. The points sticking out of the heart form a crown of thorns, signifying the suffering of Christ. The dove hanging from the cross is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. Where does it come from? The Huguenots cross was a sign of recognition and a symbol of the evangelical faith amongst the French Protestants, who for some unknown reason, in 1550, received the name "Huguenots". They became severely persecuted in 1685 when many of their rights were removed. Many escaped to Switzerland, Germany, England, North America and The Netherlands. Since the start of this century, the wearing of the cross has become popular again.
